An active participant in athletics since the age of 7, Dean was formerly member of the Mitchelton Little Athletics Centre (Brisbane, Queensland) for a couple of years winning silver medals in the under 10 and under 11 boys 4 x 100m state relay in that same year.

Whilst regularly participating in school athletics including at state level, Dean later joined the Caboolture Athletics Club (an hour north of Brisbane) at the age 16 whereby he won his first Queensland State Under 20 Title for the Decathlon. In doing so, Dean also broke the Queensland Under 20 Pole Vault record numerous times.

After winning the Queensland Decathlon Championships three years in a row, and after securing the silver medal in the Under 20 National Decathlon Championships, Dean moved to Adelaide to further his athletics career under the guidance of national decathlon and pole vault coach, Alan Launder. There Dean’s quick progression in sport led for him representing Australia at the 1990 (Auckland, New Zealand) and 1994 (Victoria, Canada) Commonwealth Games and the sole Australian Decathlete at the 1992 Olympic Games (Barcelona, Spain). He joined the Salisbury East Athletics Club where he later became life member. In 1992 he was awarded the Advance Australia Award for services to Athletics presented by the then Governor of South Australia.

He has also competed at four Deaflympic Games (his last at the Melbourne 2005 Deaflympic Games in which he was appointed Australian Deaflympic Team Captain) winning many medals and is the current world (deaf) recorder for the Decathlon and Javelin. He is also featured on Athletics Australia All Time list for the Decathlon and Javelin.

A bronze medallist at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (Beach Relay) and State Beach Sprint and Relay Champion (South Australia), Dean has also competed in a number of professional running event such as the Bay Sheffield in South Australia.

Despite a six year hiatus, Dean returned to his favourite sport joining the Knox Athletics Club in 2003-4 quickly breaking the club record for the Discus and Shot Put before injury ruled him out from competing in the 2005-06 season.

Outside of sport, Dean has served on a number of Boards and Committees for state and national organisations including, but not limited to, Founding Chairperson of the Board (and Chairperson of Marketing and Communication Committee) for the Melbourne 2005 Deaflympic Games Limited where he spearheaded the company in securing at least $8.5m in government and corporate funding.

In addition, he led what was regarded as the first Pole Vaulting competition held in a public domain namely Rundle Mall in Adelaide. Was an Athlete with a Disability representative for Athletics Australia, Vice President of Deaf Sports Australia and Chairperson of the Selection and Justification Committee for the 2001 Australian Deaflympic Games Team.

A Master in Marketing degree, Dean is the Chief Executive Officer for the Australian Association of Practice Managers (AAPM). He is also on the board of the Victorian YCMA.

Dean  was appointed as President of the Bayswater Bullets Little Athletics Club for the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons.
