Bayswater Bullets Frequently Asked Questions

Any additional Questions will be listed below

Where is Bayswater Bullets located at the Knox Centre on competition days?

We are located in the Grandstand, closest to the southern end as you walk through the rear carpark entrance. You will see our orange "Bayswater Bullets" banner at the rear of the Grandstand.

Can children try Little Aths before joining?

Yes, an official "Bring a Friend Day" is usually done in about the third week of the season but you can come anytime throughout the season for a single tryout. Just make yourself known to the Team Manager. You will be placed with your respective Gender/Age Group and given information on Little Athletics. We encourage every new athlete to use their first day as a "tryout" before deciding to join Bayswater Bullets to make sure Little Aths is for you. There is no obligation to join.

What level of ability do children need to join?

The emphasis in on fun and fitness. Children can join at any level of skill or fitness. Children are given plenty of encouragement to achieve personal bests. For example, in the sprints, once a month, the children times are graded according to their best times. Then the athletes names are called out in order of times so that every heat will contain children racing of simular ability.

How are performances monitored?

At every event, you will be given a ticket with your results. This ticket is shown to the Team Manager for recording for end of season awards. Your performance will also be checked for a Personal Best or a Seasons Best result or to see if any Club Records are broken. You then paste the ticket in the Result Booklet supplied from the Victorian Little Athletics Association and record the result at the back of this book. This will show how you have progressed throughout the season.

What do you do with the ticket after an event?

You must hand it to the Team Manager for recording so that it will count towards the end of season Trophy awards. It must be sighted within 14 days of an event to be eligible for points to be scored.

Can you cross the centre of the track to get the the other side of the ground?

No. Crossing the track must be done in designated areas only, (Corners of the track) Assembly 3 is not a crossing area.

What happens if Parents/Carers don't turn up for their assigned Duty Roster?

Firstly, it is unfair to the parents on duty on the day and unfair to the children competing! Our club also loses points for the Kathy Hale Club Supporters Award. More importantly, not enough parents on duty results in children missing out on events, only 2 throws or jumps are conducted instead of 3, Centre records broken not being recognised or the program finishing late.

For your convenience, you can choose three parent duty dates before and three duty dates after Christmas from the Team Manager's list.

What if I do duty when it is not my turn?

Firstly, thankyou very much, as in the end, it is helping our kids. If you do go on duty, please first see the "Chief of Officials" on the desk by the canteen and have your name recorded so that our Club can get points towards the Kathy Hales Club Supporters Award.

What if I have registered and I persistently do not do Parent Duty?

At the Committee's discretion, on the dates they are are assigned Parent Duty and do not do it, your children's results for that day will not be recorded, not be eligible for end of season age group award points, any potential PB's or club records will not be recognised. Each event for that day will be recorded as "null". If a family still refuses to do duty, at the Committees discretion, their children will not be eligible for end of season club awards.

What if I have other commitments on some Saturdays or Friday nights and cannot do duty?

At Bayswater Bullets, we ask parents to chose their own 3 duty dates before Christmas and 3 dates after so that dates can be convenient for your commitments..

What is the "Kathy Hale Shield" Club Supporters Award?

This is awarded on Championship Day to the Club that gives the best support to the Knox Little Athletics Centre throughout the season in proportion to the club size. Points are awarded to our club for every Official who helps out on Duty and points are awarded also for having sufficient people for Canteen Duty for the whole session when it is our Club's turn. We won this award in the 2000/01 and 2004/05 seasons.

Where do I get the Bayswater Bullets club uniform from?

Please see the Team Manager for our club uniform which is sold at cost price. We do not make a profit on uniforms.. It is compulsory to wear the club uniform on competition days with current number patch attached,

What if I forgot to bring my Registration Number?

Athletes who do not wear numbers will be marked as DNF (Did Not Finish) and therefore loose points. If lost, a new one can be obtained from the Registrar under the Grandstand for a $2.00 replacement fee.

Can I wear board shorts?

No, you must wear plain black shorts or leggings. No other colour can appear on the shorts as this is part of our uniform.

How many meetings must be attended to be eligible for Knox Championship Day?

To be eligible to compete on the Knox Championship Day at the end of the season, you must have attended 50% of the meetings before and 50% after Christmas. For those joining after Christmas, they must attend 90% of the meetings.

Is entry in the Knox Championship Day free?

No, the entry fee (in 2007 was $4.00 per event. Maximum of 4 events U7 to U11 and maximum of 5 events for U12 to U15. The costs help pay for Medals to the first 3 place getters and ribbons for those that come 4th to 8th place.

What is the Knox Open Twilight Meeting?

Each Centre has a day where registered members from other Centres can come down and compete. KLAC has their one as a Twilight on the last Saturday of January commencing at 2:00pm and finishing approx 9:30pm. Cost is $6 per event or $20 for max 4 events. Knox LAC Medals will be awarded to the first three placegetters and Ribbons for 4th to 8th place. Entry is by the official entry form. Parents of competing children will be rostered on either an early or the late shift.

Don't forget, you are able to attend Open Days at any of the other Centres within Victoria too. Please see our Notices & Forms  for the other Centre dates.

What if I do not have both the Entry Form and Payment ready for the Knox Open Twilight or Knox Championship Day Deadline?

You will miss out. A few years ago the Club had paid a fee for an athlete to enter as his parents were not at the track so he would not miss out. When his father came to pick him up, not only did he say his son wasn't entering or paying the club back the fee, he was quite rude to our Committee Member.

At the following Committee Meeting it was decided that the Club would not ever do this again for any athlete who cannot have the form and money ready by the deadline.

What are Open Days?

These are days where athletes from other Centres can compete for Medals and Ribbons. We encourage our athletes to compete at Open Days at other Centres usually held on a Sunday for a cost of around $5 or $6  per event. See our Notices & Forms webpage for Open Day Dates.

Are Club Records, PB's or Athlete points counted in the Knox Open Twilight if I enter an event not listed in my age group, but in an event one year higher?

In the Knox Open Twilight, if an athlete’s event is not available, an athlete may compete in an age group one year higher. To be recognised as a SB, PB,  Club Record or athlete points, the event must be the same distance, weight or height as in their own age group. Some examples:

If an U/14 Shot Put (3Kg) competes in the U/15 Shot Put (3Kg) or an U/10 400m competed in the U/11 400m, they would be recognised as a record in their own age group or be a potential SB/PB.

If an U/10 1100m Walk competes in the U/11 1500m Walk, or an U/9 80m Hurdles (45cm) competes in the U/10 80m Hurdles (60cm), or an U/10 Discus (500g) competed in the U/11 Discus (750g) there would not be a PB or Club Record recognised.

Do both heats and finals count for Point Scoring on the Knox Open Twilight or Knox Championship Day?

Where athletes have both heats and finals, only the fastest time of either will be used for point scoring, not both.

Do they call out the events over the PA on Knox Open Twilight or Knox Championship Day?

No. The events are run off a time table and athletes must go the the Marshalling Areas 15 minutes before their event so their names can be marked off the event sheet. The group will then be escorted to their event. The timetable can be bought on the way into the track.

Where are these Marshalling Areas on Knox Open Twilight or Knox Championship Day?

There are two Marshalling Areas. The first one is on the hill by "Area 2" for all track events conducted in lanes. The second one is by the Hammerthrow Cage between "Areas 4 & 5" for all field and circular events.

What does it mean by Circular Events?

Circular Events are those which are not conducted in lanes such as 800m, 1500m, walks etc.

Do PB's and points count in Open Days at other Centres?

No, only at the Knox Open Twilight.

What is the Regional Championships?

All the Centres in Victoria compete in the two day Regional Championships Zones around the middle of February to try and qualify for the Victorian State Championships held a month later. We compete in the Eastern Metropolitan Region. Under 9 to15 have the opportunity to select events to compete in. The Knox Centre will pay the fees to compete in these Regionals, so if entered you must attend. Failure to do so without a reasonable excuse will result in the parents having to reimburse the Centre all associated fees. Every parent of athletes attending will be required to do duty on one of these days. Failure to so will result in the athletes being withdrawn from their chosen events.

Can I wear my Bayswater Bullets top in the Regional or State Championships?

No. If you do not wear the official Knox Centre yellow and black uniform with plain black shorts, you will be disqualified in any event attempted.

Where do I get the yellow and black Knox Centre uniform?

These will be on sale by the canteen a few weeks before the Regional Championships in the Summer Track & Field season or by the Announcer at the Winter Cross Country season

How many Regions are in Victoria?

There are seven Regions. Four in the Metropolitan area and three in the country.

What Region is the Knox Centre in?

We are one of thirteen Centres in the Eastern Metropolitan Region. For a full list of Regions and the Centres associated with each one within Victoria, please click here to view the list.

How do you qualify to be in the Victorian State Championships?

The first two winners in an event of the Regional Championships qualify for the Victorian State Championships held over two days in mid March at Olympic Park. This make a total of 16 athletes. In addition, a  further 8 positions progress to State based on the next best 8 results from all Regions within Victoria to make up the 24 athletes required. The Knox Centre will pay the entry fees. Parents of competing athletes will be required to do duty.

Can I wear my Bayswater Bullets top in the Regional or State Championships?

No. If you do not wear the official Knox Centre yellow and black uniform, you will be disqualified in any event attempted.

Where do I get the yellow and black Knox Centre uniform?

These will be on sale by the canteen a few weeks before the Regional Championships in the Summer Track & Field season or by the Announcer at the Winter Cross Country season

Can I wear the Bayswater Bullets club singlet on a Open Day?

Yes, but it must have the Registration Patch. You can wear a Knox Centre singlet without the patch.

What is the Australian Team Championships?

This is an annual event conducted by Australian Little Athletics for Under 13 representative teams from each state. To be eligible, an athlete must have competed in an event at the finals of the State Championships. It is held in a different state each year.

If the first time I do an event results with a Disqualification (ie Walk, Javelin or "No Jump" in the Jumping events), will the next time I do this with a time or distance be a PB?

No. Disqualifications or No Jump do not count as a result for PB or SB's. You must have a time or distance established first before a PB would be recognised.

What is the Knox Multi-Event Day?

Please see our Multi-Event webpage for full details

Is there club records for the most number of points on Multi-Event Days?

Yes. Multi-Event day (last competition day in December) has been at the Knox Centre for since season 2003/04. In addition, there is a State Multi-Event Championships early March which the Knox Centre will pay entry fee. You will be required to do half day parent duty.

Can club Multi-Event points at the State Multi-Event Championships count for Club Records?

Yes,  the results obtained in the Multi-Event State Championships count.

What about points obtained on Multi-Event Open Days at other Centres?

No, it is the same rules as Track & Field Open Days

What is a PB?

A PB (Personal Best) is when you better your own time, distance or height for an event compared with your own previous best result for that event.

Are PB's transferred to the following season?

Yes. From season 2006/07, PB's will be carried on from the previous season. This means you can potentially obtain a PB on the very first day of the new season.

What is a SB?

A SB (Seasons Best)  is where your result in the current season did not better your all time PB, but was better than your previous result in the current season.

Can you get a SB the first time you do an event, if it is not a PB?

No. Before a SB can be recorded, a result that is not a PB has to be established first. The next time the event is conducted, if the result is still not a PB, but betters the previous result in the same season, then this would be your Seasons Best (SB) performance.

Why was a SB introduced?

It was introduced to recognise that at a start of a new season, it may take some fitness to get back to where an athlete had left off from the end of the previous season.  Seasons Best is a concept used in Senior Athletics. Some Knox Centre clubs already carry over PB's from previous seasons to resist the temptation of some athletes who may deliberately under perform early in the season and try to stagger their results to help boost their PB totals, which defeats the Little Aths motto "be your best".

What recognition is there for obtaining a SB?

SB’s would be worth 1/3 PB bonus point. You must have 3 SB’s to make a PB bonus point.

The table below shows the number of PB points for SB’s obtained throughout the season.

What happens if the event in the new season is a greater weight such as in Discus or a higher Hurdle?

Your PB from the previous season will not be carried over.

How do I know when a new event, height or weight is used for each age group?

Does a PB in a heat, then a PB in a final count towards total PB's in the Knox Open Twilight, Region, State Multi-Event, State Track & Field or Knox Championship Day?

If a heat results in a PB, then the final betters the heat time for a second PB, then both PB's will be counted.

PB Medal Awards Age Group Trophy Awards   Overall Best Boy
Overall Best Girl RACV Travel Perpetual 'Achievers' Trophy 5 Year Certificate
9 Year Plaque Club Record Holder Certificate Achievement Award Certificate
Best Club Person Award

What is the PB Medal award?

We have a PB Medal Award for all those who achieve over 15 PB's for the season including the Knox, Regional, State Multi and State Track & Field Championships. This is to recognise an athletes continued improvement throughout the season on their own times or distances. The PB Medal Awards started from the 1996/97 season where there is only one medal won, depending on the amount of PB's obtained.  For those who achieve 15 to 21 PB's for the season, they will get a Bronze Medal. 22 to 29 PB's for the season will then win a Silver medal or those with 30 or more PB's will win the Gold PB medal award instead. These are presented at the AGM/Presentation day at the end of the Summer season.

Are the winners of each Age Group Trophy Awards in the Bayswater Bullets Club the one with the most PB's?

No, Person Best (PB's) do not count towards the Age Group award. It is based on each athletes ability compare to each other within the same age group. A "point system" is used for each event competed.

Do PB's count towards the Age Group Trophy Awards?

No, they are not used in the "Age Group" Trophy Awards. A Point System is used to determine Age Group Winners. PB Medals were introduced in the 1996/97 season as a way to recognise Personal Best achievements.  But PB's do count towards the "Overall Best" Boy and Girl though!

How are the Age Group Trophy Award "point system" determined then?

The athlete with the best time or distance for the event within the same Age Group get points equal to the amount of athletes in the group. For example:

The age group, 1st, 2nd, etc points for these will be gained solely on their finishing order in each event. If for example the Bayswater Bullets age group has four boy athletes registered:

1st will get 4 points
2nd will get 3 points
3rd will get 2 points
4th will get 1 point

In the case of two athletes tieing in an event, both will receive the maximum points for the position they finished.

1st will get 4 points
2nd will get 4 points
3rd will get 2 points
4th will get 1 point

If only three athletes compete in an event:

1st will get 4 points
2nd will get 3 points
3rd will get 2 points
No 4th athlete competing so no points awarded

A disqualification in an event will receive no points

If an athlete starts an event but is injured during and cannot finish, one point will be awarded.

How are the winners determined for the Bayswater Bullets Best Overall Boy and Girl Awards?

A traditional Club formula passed on from previous Committees is used based on each athletes results for the season. This is to work out who is the Best Overall Boy and Best Overall Girl in our Club out of all the age group winners. It is a combination of PB's, the "point system", age group rating and the number of athletes in the age group.

Points are scored throughout the season with a loading for PB's with allowances to both points scored and events. This is to even out the larger and smaller age groups. It is also to even out those in the older age groups with more event opportunities to compete against the younger groups with less events.  The official club formula used is:

Number of Points *                                                                      Group with most events

----------------------------------                X  Number of PB's *  X      ---------------------------------

Number of children in age group                                               Number of events in age group

* Points and PB's obtained in Region, State Multi and State Championships are not included

Is this formula used to work out the Club Winner and Runner Up Trophy Awards for each age group?

No. It is based only on  the "Number of Points" mentioned above within the Age Group to determine the winning athletes. This formula is just to determine the Best Overall Boy and Girl within the club out of all the Age Group winners.

Do I still get points if I am attending the EMR Coaching Camps on the same day as Little Aths?

Yes, on the average of points received for the same events one before and one after.

Is anyone paid a wage at the Knox Little Athletics Centre?

No. Everyone, like yourself, is a volunteer and it has been this way for over 38 years.

What about Bayswater Bullets Little Athletics Club then?

No - we are all volunteers

What is Youth Athletics?

Formerly called Inter Aths, Youth Athletics is a sub category of Athletics Victoria's "Competing Athlete' membership. It is available to athletes that are under 16 on 1st October of the current summer season and they wear the Knox Senior Athletic uniform and bib number to be able to compete at both Little and Senior Athletics. Championships are only available at the Knox Centre Championships Day and through Senior Athletics.

Can I be affiliated with Bayswater Bullets as an Youth Athlete?

Only if you had competed with Bayswater Bullets as an Under 15 and have paid the $10 affiliation fee.

Can I have a refund if my child decides to give up Little Athletics during the season?

No. There are no refunds once fees are paid which is why we prefer all new children to try out a day for free first before deciding. The majority of the fees go to the VLAA and Knox LAC which we are not able to get back once paid.

Can I leave my Child(ren) there and pick them up at the close of a meeting?

Little Athletics is not a babysitting service for Parents. Members of the Club have many jobs to do on a competition day,  without the added inconvenience of waiting for a child's parent to collect at the end of the day. (It is a requirement of the Centre for Parents/Carers to be in attendance) If arrangements have been made with another family, then that is OK, but please let the Team Manager know in advance.
